• ✓A check that water drains instead of sitting in low spots along the trough.

If a quote doesn't mention the downspouts or the hard-to-reach runs, ask about them before you book.

These are the things that change how often you should plan a cleaning:

• ✓Pine trees nearby. Pine needles are thin and pack down tight. They shed through much of the year, so gutters near pines can clog between the usual spring and fall visits.
• ✓An aging roof. Older shingles shed grit that settles in the bottom of the gutter like wet sand. That weight adds up, even on a house with no trees close by.
• ✓Gutter guards. Guards cut down on big debris, but they don't end cleaning. Fine material still builds up on top of them or slips through, so plan on regular checks.
• ✓Big storms. A heavy wind or thunderstorm can dump a season's worth of leaves and twigs into your gutters in one night. A quick look after a major storm is a smart habit.

Timing matters as much as how often. If you clean in early October and the big trees don't finish dropping until late November, you've paid for a clean gutter that's full again by Thanksgiving. Booking after most of the leaves are down gets you more out of each visit. In spring, a cleaning after the pollen and seed drop clears things out before the heavier summer storms arrive.

Here's the part most people don't think about. A regular schedule isn't only about keeping leaves out. Every visit comes with an inspection and photos, so a regular schedule means someone is checking your gutter system on a set rhythm. A bracket that's just starting to loosen in spring is easy to deal with. That same bracket after a full year of heavy, wet debris can let a whole section pull away and dump water against your foundation. Regular visits are how you catch small problems while they're still small and cheap to fix.
