Pine straw and debris covering a roof and gutters

Why Gutters Fill Up So Fast

Trees are nice to look at, but they're hard on your gutters. Oak trees drop leaves most of the year. Pine trees drop straw and needles. These stick together and pack tight. That means gutters can fill up fast.

When gutters get full, water can't flow through. It has to go somewhere else. It runs down your walls. It can even reach your foundation. This happens a lot in areas with lots of trees, mostly in spring and fall.

A clogged gutter is more than just messy. It can hold still water. That water can breed mosquitoes. Over time, it can also damage your home.

Is It Time to Clean Your Gutters?

Look for these signs. Don't wait for the next storm.

  • Water spills over the side of your gutter when it rains
  • Black streaks run down your gutter or the side of your house
  • Gutters sag or pull away from the roof
  • Plants or grass grow inside the gutter
  • Water pools near your foundation after rain
  • Mosquitoes buzz near your roof

If you see even one of these, your gutters need help.

Your Gutter Cleaning Questions, Answered

How often should I clean my gutters?+

Most homes need cleaning twice a year, spring and fall. If you have lots of trees, you may need a third cleaning in summer.

Why are my gutters overflowing?+

Something is blocking the water. Usually it's leaves, pine straw, or a clogged downspout. When water can't move through, it spills over the side.

Why do I need to clean my gutters?+

Clogged gutters send water straight down your walls and foundation. Over time, this can cause rot and cracks. That means costly repairs later.

Can't I just clean my gutters myself?+

You can, but it's risky. Climbing a ladder on a two-story home can lead to falls. A pro can also spot small problems early, like a loose bracket or a small leak, that are hard to see from the ground.

I have gutter guards. Do I still need cleaning?+

Yes. Guards help, but they don't stop everything. Small bits of pine straw and dirt still get through. You should still clean guarded gutters at least once a year.

Why are my gutters turning black?+

Black streaks mean water is sitting still and growing algae. It's a sign your gutters aren't draining like they should.

Do gutter guards stop the need for cleaning?+

No. Guards help a lot, but they are not maintenance-free. Fine pine straw and pollen can still build up inside them over time.
