Gutter screen fitted along a gutter run

Gutter Screen Installation

Fewer cleanings. Not zero cleanings. We'll tell you which.

Screens won't eliminate cleaning entirely, but they can cut how often you need it. If heavy leaf coverage has you calling three times a year, screens are worth the conversation.

Pine straw and leaf load on a roof and gutters

What Gutter Screens Actually Do

No gutter screen on the market eliminates the need for cleaning. Pollen, shingle grit and pine needles in particular pass through or pile up on top of most screens over time. Around here, pine needles are the biggest factor, and they are thin enough to slide through a lot of screen openings.

What screens do well is block leaves, twigs and larger debris. On a house with heavy oak, maple or poplar coverage, a good screen can take you from two or three cleanings a year down to one.

If pine needles are your main problem, talk to us before you buy anything from anyone. We would rather tell you screens are the wrong call than sell you a product that does not fix your issue.

🌳 Good candidates for screens

  • Homes with heavy oak, maple or sweetgum coverage
  • Two-story homes that are harder to access safely
  • Homes being cleaned three or more times a year
  • Vacation or rental properties with less regular oversight

🌲 Where screens underperform

  • × Heavy pine needle coverage, needles slide through most screens
  • × Significant pollen load, fine enough to pass any opening
  • × Gutters with existing damage or improper pitch
  • × Homes where the real issue is an underground drain blockage

We Don't Sell Micro-Mesh

Micro-mesh gets sold hard and it doesn't hold up the way the pitch says, particularly against the fine pine needle and pollen load in this area. We don't install it. If somebody quotes you micro-mesh as a permanent fix for pine straw, ask them what happens in year three.

Screens Plus A Plan Is The Real Answer

Screens cut the frequency. A seasonal plan covers the cleaning you still need, and gets someone on the roof to check the screens are sitting right. Plans run $25 to $79 a month by home size.

Your Gutter Screen Questions, Answered

Do gutter screens really work?+

They work well for large debris like leaves and twigs. They're less effective against pine needles and pollen. If your main issue is leaves, screens will help. If pine needles are the problem, they may not reduce cleaning frequency enough to justify the cost, and we will tell you that up front.

\n
Will I still need gutter cleaning with screens on?+

Yes, in most cases. Screens reduce how often you need cleaning, not whether you need it. Plan for at least one cleaning per year even with screens installed.

\n
Do you install micro-mesh guards?+

No. We don't install micro-mesh. It doesn't hold up the way it's sold, particularly against the fine pine needle and pollen load around here, so we don't put it on customers' homes. We fit screens, and we'll be straight with you about what they will and won't do.

\n
Can screens go on my existing gutters?+

Yes. We install screens on existing gutters in most cases. If your gutters have structural issues that need addressing first, we'll flag that during the estimate rather than covering a problem up.

\n
What happens if screens don't make sense for my house?+

We tell you before you spend money. If your tree load is mostly pine, or the real problem turns out to be pitch or a blocked underground drain, screens are not the fix and we say so.

\n
Do you clean the gutters before installing screens?+

Always. Putting screens over a clogged or damaged gutter locks the problem in where nobody can see it. The gutters get cleared and checked first, every time.
